Your first HydraFacial, start to finish

A HydraFacial takes 30 to 60 minutes, and you can expect the same sequence each time.

  1. A look at your skin. Your esthetician examines it and asks what you want to improve, then picks the serums to suit: congestion and acne, dryness, discoloration or early signs of aging.
  2. Cleansing and a gentle peel. A vacuum tip clears the pores while a mild glycolic and salicylic acid solution loosens dead skin.
  3. Extraction. Blackheads and other debris are lifted out by the device’s suction, with no metal tools pressing on the skin.
  4. Infusion. Hyaluronic acid, antioxidants and peptides are worked into the freshly cleared skin, with LED light along the way.
  5. Finishing. A hydrating moisturizer is massaged in, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen goes on last to protect the newly resurfaced skin.

What you feel is mild suction and pressure. It is not painful, and you walk out looking refreshed.

How it differs from other facials

If you have tried other facials before, it helps to know how a HydraFacial compares with them. Microdermabrasion exfoliates with fine crystals but does not clean out pores or infuse serums. Dermaplaning exfoliates by hand with a scalpel, again without the deep cleanse, and carries more risk of irritation. Laser resurfacing such as CO2 removes layers of skin and is far more invasive, with a longer recovery. A HydraFacial sits at the gentle end: thorough, but with no downtime and no days of healing afterwards.

Who gives it

At Bellava the treatment is performed by licensed medical estheticians Semira Crecco-Donnelly, who has more than 20 years in the field, and Natalina McEwan, who has over 12 years in plastic surgery and medical aesthetics. Both are part of a practice led by a physician, its medical director Donna D’Alessio, MD. Every skin type can have one, and the treatment is as suitable for men as it is for women.

Making it a habit

One treatment brightens the skin straight away, but the benefits build with repetition, and clinicians usually advise a HydraFacial every four to six weeks to keep pores clear and skin hydrated. Bellava’s membership includes a HydraFacial each month. Saturday hours, 10 am to 2 pm, make a regular weekend slot easy, and from Goldens Bridge the office is a little over four miles away by I-684 and the Saw Mill River Parkway, roughly eight minutes without traffic.

Goldens Bridge patients ask

Will my face be red afterwards? Any redness fades quickly. Some people feel a mild tenderness, like a light sunburn, for a few hours.

Can I exercise the same day? Better not. Skip heavy exercise for the rest of the day; everything else can go ahead as normal.

Can it help with breakouts? It can. Clearing congested pores is part of every treatment, and the serums can be chosen with acne in mind. For scarring left behind by old breakouts, ask about microneedling.
