Two different treatments under one roof

Hormone replacement therapy at Bellava is offered to men and to women, and while the hormones differ, the approach does not.

  • For men, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). Testosterone falls slowly, so the signs are easy to blame on work or age for years: stamina that fades by mid-afternoon, muscle that will not hold despite training, a lower sex drive, a short fuse and trouble focusing. TRT is considered once a blood test confirms the level is low.
  • For women, estrogen and progesterone therapy. It covers perimenopause, menopause and the years beyond, when hot flashes, night sweats, broken sleep, brain fog, mood swings, weight gathering at the waist and a fading libido can all trace back to shifting hormones.

The goal is a normal range, not a big number

Hormone therapy replaces what your body has stopped making in sufficient amounts. The point is not to push a result as high as the lab can report; it is to bring your levels back into the range where you function well and feel like yourself. That is why blood work always comes before a prescription, and why the figures are read together with your symptoms. Two people with an identical result do not always need the same treatment.

Every plan is overseen by Bellava’s medical director, Donna D’Alessio, MD, board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. You meet the team in person at the office in Bedford Hills; nothing is handled by a remote prescriber.

Injections or a cream

The hormones are prescription medicines, and how they are given is chosen to fit your life. Injections allow precise, adjustable dosing for close control of your levels. Topical creams and gels, applied to the skin, suit people who would rather have a flexible daily routine. Your provider talks through both at the consultation.

The first few months

Plenty of patients feel a difference in energy, mood and sleep within a few weeks. Changes in libido, body composition and mental clarity take longer, usually two to three months, while levels settle. Some temporary effects can show up early on: mild bloating, breast tenderness or mood swings while estrogen settles, acne or other skin changes, a little fluid retention, or soreness where an injection was given. Follow-up labs track how you are responding, and the dose is adjusted on that evidence.

Because those rechecks are part of the plan, distance counts. From Goldens Bridge, Bellava is a little over four miles south by I-684 and the Saw Mill River Parkway, about eight minutes without traffic.

Goldens Bridge patients ask

Who should not have hormone therapy? A personal or family history of hormone-sensitive cancer, blood clots or certain heart and blood-vessel conditions may rule it out. Finding that out is what the history and labs are for, and if HRT is not right for you, you will be told.

What will it cost? That depends on which hormones you need, how they are given, the dose and how often you are seen. The full cost is explained at the consultation before anything starts, and financing is available.
