More than one way to lift a face

Ageing does not happen to the whole face at once. For some people the first thing they notice is the jawline softening into jowls; for others it is the neck, or a tired look that has more to do with lost volume than loose skin. That is why Bellava offers several ways to treat it, from full surgery to injectables, and why the first step is working out which you actually need. All of them are in Bedford Hills, a little over four miles south of Goldens Bridge by I-684 and the Saw Mill River Parkway, about eight minutes without traffic.

The options, compared

  • Full facelift. Dr. Chang Soo Kim tightens the deeper tissue that supports the cheeks, jowls and neck, removes excess skin and fat, and hides the incisions in the hairline and the creases around the ear.
  • Mini facelift. Bellava offers a smaller facelift as well as the full one, and Dr. Kim will tell you whether it would be enough for you.
  • Neck lift. Small incisions, often under the chin and behind the ears, give access to the platysma muscles, which are tightened before excess fat is removed and the skin re-draped. It targets loose neck skin, vertical bands, a double chin or a “turkey neck”.
  • Liquid facelift. Injectables — BOTOX® and dermal fillers — lift and smooth chosen areas without surgery or scars, and you can carry on with your day straight away.
  • PDO thread lift. Threads made of polydioxanone are placed in the skin with a fine needle to form a supporting lattice — another non-surgical route.

A facelift is often combined with eyelid surgery, fat transfer to the face or laser resurfacing when those would round out the result.

What recovery from a facelift looks like

A surgical facelift at Bellava is an outpatient procedure, so you recover at home. Bellava’s own description is of a quick recovery with minimal bruising, and in practice the first weeks look like this:

  • The first week. A support garment for the neck helps to keep swelling down in the neck and lower face.
  • After that. The support is usually worn at night for a while longer.
  • Bruising. What there is can generally be covered with make-up.
  • If you had extras. Areas of laser resurfacing need looking after, and fat grafts massaging, for at least two weeks.

Your follow-up visits are back in Bedford Hills, so a check-up from Goldens Bridge is a quick trip down the interstate.

Goldens Bridge patients ask

Will it look as if I have had work done? The aim is the reverse: a lift from within rather than a pulled tightness, with your features kept in proportion so you look refreshed and still like yourself.

Do men have facelifts? Yes. Men and women are equally interested in looking as energetic as they feel.
