1. Your health history

One of Bellava’s providers goes through your current health, medications, drug allergies and any previous procedures. Some conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes or a bleeding disorder, can raise the risk of a procedure, and Bellava’s guidance is to get your health in order first.

2. What you want to change

You describe the areas you want treated and what a good result would look like to you. Photographs may be taken so the concern can be studied. Laser lipo is aimed at stubborn pockets of fat on the love handles, the thighs and the abdomen — places that have resisted diet and exercise.

3. The examination

The provider looks at your skin, the areas of concern, your muscle tone and, above all, your skin’s elasticity. Elasticity and the amount of fat present are what decide how much any contouring can achieve.

4. A straight answer

Bellava says it is upfront about realistic expectations. You may hear that laser lipo suits you well. You may also hear that something else would serve you better:

What the treatment then involves

Pulses of low-level laser light pass through the skin from a panel of optical fibres, and the fat cells absorb the energy and break down while nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue are left alone. There is no incision and no anesthesia, so you return to your day straight afterwards, at most a little sore. The result builds gradually and is complete within six to eight weeks.
