A course of visits, so the trip matters

Laser hair removal is done as a series. Bellava’s usual starting plan is six treatments spaced four to six weeks apart, with a touch-up every six to twelve months once the course is finished, because dormant follicles go on producing new hair. With that many appointments, a practice close to home earns its keep. From Katonah, Bellava is a three-minute drive down Bedford Road and Route 117 without traffic, and its Saturday hours, 10 am to 2 pm, leave room for a session on the weekend.

How the laser stops hair growing

The laser’s light is absorbed by the pigment in each hair follicle, which heats up and is damaged enough to stop producing hair, while the skin around it is spared. The contrast between dark hair and lighter skin makes that easiest. Bellava’s IPL technology lets the settings be adjusted for darker skin as well, using lower energy and a cooling handpiece so the follicle is treated and the surrounding skin protected.

Where it can be used

  • Face: upper lip, chin, cheeks, jawline, neck and sideburns
  • Underarms and hands, fingers included
  • Legs: upper and lower legs, down to the feet
  • Bikini area
  • Back, chest and shoulders

A session runs from about 15 minutes for an upper lip to an hour for full legs or a back.

Before and after each session

Four weeks out of the sun and tanning beds comes first, so a course can be simpler to plan in the cooler months. Stop waxing and electrolysis a month ahead, shave the area a day or two before, and arrive with clean skin free of lotion and makeup. Tell your provider about any medication, since some make skin more sensitive to the laser.

Afterwards the skin may look a little red or swollen for a few hours; an ice pack helps. Keep the area out of direct sun, and skip exercise heavy enough to make you sweat, for 24 to 48 hours.

Who treats you

Laser hair removal is performed by Bellava’s licensed medical estheticians, Semira Crecco-Donnelly and Natalina McEwan.

Questions from Katonah

Does it hurt? Most people compare each pulse to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Optional cooling is available to make it more comfortable.

When will I notice a difference? Treated hairs start to shed after the first couple of sessions, and the best reduction tends to show by the fourth or fifth.

How many treatments will I need? It varies with the area, how thick the hair is, your ethnicity and your hormones, so your plan is set at a free consultation.
