Botox FAQ
Why do I get frown lines and crow’s feet?
Frown lines and crow’s feet are types of wrinkles that commonly develop on the face due to the following factors:
1. Aging: As we age, our skin loses its elasticity and becomes thinner. This happens because our body’s production of collagen and elastin—two proteins that help our skin stay plump, firm, and smooth—slows down.
2. Sun exposure: Long-term exposure to the sun can lead to premature skin aging, or photoaging. The ultraviolet (UV) light damages the fibers in the skin called elastin, causing the skin to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to bounce back after stretching.
3. Repetitive facial expressions and movements: Over time, repetitive facial movements like frowning, squinting, or smiling can lead to fine lines and wrinkles. When you use a facial muscle, a groove forms beneath the surface of the skin. And as skin ages, it loses its flexibility and is no longer able to spring back in place, leading to permanent grooves.
4. Smoking: Nicotine in cigarettes narrows the blood vessels in the outer layers of your skin, impairing blood flow to your skin. With less blood flow, your skin doesn’t get as much oxygen and important nutrients. Additionally, many of the over 4,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke damage collagen and elastin.
5. Poor nutrition and dehydration: A lack of vital nutrients and hydration can negatively affect the skin’s elasticity and overall health, contributing to the formation of wrinkles.
6. Sleep positions: Sleeping in certain positions may lead to ‘sleep lines’. Sleeping on your side can cause wrinkles on cheeks and chin, while sleeping face-down gives you a furrowed brow.
To reduce these effects, consider adopting healthy lifestyle habits like wearing sunscreen, not smoking, staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, and getting enough sleep. Alternatively, wrinkles and facial lines can be reduced with Botox & dermal fillers to help you give you your youthful appearance again.
