Breakouts first, scars second

Acne scarring is one of the commonest reasons people ask about microneedling, and the order of treatment matters. Bellava’s guidance is that skin with very active acne may not be suitable for it, so the first job is often to calm the breakouts. The practice has tools for that: a HydraFacial clears congested pores and can use serums chosen for acne-prone skin, and Aerolase is the laser Bellava uses for acne and redness. Once the skin has settled, microneedling goes to work on the marks left behind.

How it rebuilds the skin

Fine sterile needles of surgical-grade titanium or steel open microscopic channels in the skin. The body treats them as something to mend and lays down new collagen and elastin, which smooth and firm the skin from within. Needle length can be set anywhere between 0.25 mm and 2.5 mm, with speed and pressure adjusted as the session goes, so a deep scar and a delicate area are never treated alike.

The same channels let whatever is applied during the session reach deeper. Serums, hyaluronic acid or PRP, platelet-rich plasma prepared from your own blood, can be used, and Vivace adds radiofrequency energy to the needles.

What a course looks like

  • Three to six sessions, four to six weeks apart, for the most collagen with comfortable treatments.
  • The first change is often visible within two weeks.
  • Collagen keeps forming for months after each session, so the improvement builds.
  • A maintenance visit every six to twelve months keeps it going.

Acne marks are not the only target. Surgical scars, enlarged pores, fine lines, sun damage, uneven tone and stretch marks after pregnancy respond to the same process, on the face and on the body.

The visit and the week after

After a skin analysis, a numbing cream goes on, and most patients feel little or no pain. The treatment takes 30 to 60 minutes and finishes with a soothing serum or mask. Redness lasts 12 to 48 hours; after that the skin may flake for a few days, and it should be left to shed on its own. Stay out of direct sun for at least 48 hours, and go without makeup, exfoliants and hot showers for several days.

Treatments are given by Bellava’s licensed medical estheticians, Semira Crecco-Donnelly and Natalina McEwan, in Bedford Hills, about 23 minutes from Waccabuc without traffic by Route 138 and I-684.

Lewisboro patients ask

Who should not have it? Besides skin with very active acne, people prone to keloid scars or with certain skin disorders may not be candidates. Very sensitive skin may not tolerate the longest needle settings.

Can it be combined with Botox or filler? Yes. Microneedling done before injectables helps them work, and Bellava’s injectors can plan the two together.
