The course, visit by visit

Laser hair removal is done as a series rather than in one sitting, and knowing the shape of the course makes it far easier to plan.

  • The consultation. It is free. Your hair growth pattern is assessed and a plan is set for each area. How many treatments you need depends on the area, how thick the hair is, your ethnicity and your hormones.
  • The first couple of sessions. Treated hairs begin to shed.
  • The rest of the first course. Bellava’s usual starting plan is six treatments, spaced four to six weeks apart, so the course runs over several months. The best reduction tends to show around the fourth or fifth.
  • After that. A touch-up every six to twelve months, because dormant follicles go on producing new hair.

Before every session

The same preparation comes round each time. Keep the area out of the sun and away from tanning beds for four weeks. Stop waxing and electrolysis a month ahead, since both disturb the follicle the laser needs to find. Shave a day or two before, and arrive with clean skin, free of lotion, powder or makeup. Mention any medication, because some make skin more sensitive to the laser.

Planning around the town pool

That four-week sun rule is what a Lewisboro summer runs into. If July means afternoons at the town pool in Lewisboro Town Park on Route 35, a course begun in the autumn will be well under way before swimming season arrives.

Every skin tone

The light is absorbed by the pigment in each follicle, which heats up and is damaged enough to stop producing hair. Dark hair on lighter skin is the simplest combination. For deeper skin tones, Bellava’s IPL technology is calibrated to your own pigmentation, with lower energy and a cooling handpiece, to protect against burns and against patches of lighter or darker skin.

Who treats you

Sessions are with Bellava’s licensed medical estheticians, Semira Crecco-Donnelly and Natalina McEwan.

Lewisboro patients ask

How long is each appointment? About 15 minutes for an upper lip and up to an hour for full legs or a back. From South Salem the drive is roughly 16 minutes without traffic, along Route 35.

What does it feel like? Warmth as the handpiece moves, and a quick snap with each pulse that most people compare to a rubber band. Optional cooling makes it more comfortable.

And afterwards? Mild redness or swelling usually settles within a few hours, and an ice pack helps. Stay out of direct sun and skip sweaty exercise for 24 to 48 hours, and cleanse and moisturize gently.
