Plenty of people know they want “a little more” from their lips without knowing how to say where. A handful of terms that Bellava’s injectors use every day make the consultation quicker and bring the result closer to the one you pictured. Here they are in plain English, with what each means for the treatment.

• Vermilion border. The edge where the pink of the lip meets the surrounding skin. Filler placed precisely along it sharpens definition without adding much size.
• Cupid’s bow. The double curve in the middle of the upper lip. If yours is flat or blurred, shaping it is a task in itself.
• Philtrum columns. The two ridges rising from the bow toward the nose. Refining them is part of giving the upper lip a youthful outline.
• Golden ratio. Bellava’s rule of proportion, with the upper lip holding about two-thirds of the volume of the lower. It is what stops a lip looking overfilled, face on or in profile.
• Micro-droplets and threading. Two ways of laying in very small amounts of filler, as tiny beads or fine lines of product, where only a touch of volume is wanted.

Bellava’s nurse injectors are Grace Jacildo, BSN, RN and Nicole Cardwell, FNP-BC, a board-certified family nurse practitioner whose background in critical care and urgent care means a full medical history comes first. They work on the team led by the medical director, Donna D’Alessio, MD.

How long is the appointment? Between 15 and 30 minutes, and the difference is visible as soon as it is over.

How will my lips feel in the first week? Swollen, tender, perhaps bruised and a little tight for the first three days; softer and less swollen from about day four; fully settled by two weeks. Cold compresses and a gentle lip balm help along the way.
