Fat reduction, not weight loss

CoolSculpting is easy to misread. It is not a way to lose weight; it reduces one particular pocket of fat, such as love handles, a lower-belly pooch or a bulge beside a bra strap, that refuses to shift however carefully you eat and train. Controlled cooling chills the fat cells in that area until they die off naturally, and over the following months your body clears them away. Those cells do not grow back, but the rest of you can still gain weight, so results last best when your weight stays steady.

Mapping the treatment

The consultation is free. It covers the areas that bother you, your health history and anything you have had done before, and it ends with a plan written for your body. That plan says which areas to treat and how many sessions each is likely to need, since some areas respond in one session and others need more. The spots treated most often are:

What a session feels like

The panels feel cold as they go on, and there is a pulling sensation while suction draws the tissue in; after that, most clients liken it to a firm massage. A session lasts 35 to 60 minutes depending on how many applicators are used, and people read, catch up on work or nap through it. There is no recovery period afterwards.

The usual side effects, redness, bruising or numbness where the panel sat, clear within days to a few weeks.
