What the injection does

Botox is a purified botulinum toxin type A. Placed in tiny amounts into a chosen muscle, it blocks acetylcholine, the chemical messenger that tells the muscle to contract. The muscle eases, the skin above it stops folding, and fresh creases are slower to form. Over several months the nerve signal returns, which is why the smoothing lasts roughly three to four months before a repeat visit. Botox has held FDA approval for cosmetic use since 2002.

The visit itself

After a short talk about your goals and health history, the areas are cleansed and may be numbed with a topical anesthetic. A series of tiny injections then goes in through a very fine needle, and the whole treatment usually takes 10 to 15 minutes. The effect starts within 3 to 10 days and peaks at about two weeks. Any redness, swelling or small bruise generally settles within a few days.
