It starts with a plan

Your first visit is a free consultation. Bellava’s laser team looks at where your hair grows, how thick it is and your skin tone, then maps out a series: usually six treatments four to six weeks apart, with a touch-up every six to twelve months once the series is over, since dormant follicles go on producing hair. The exact count depends on the area, the hair, your ethnicity and your hormones.

What a session involves

  1. Arrive shaved and clean. Shave the area a day or two beforehand and come without lotion, makeup or powder on it.
  2. Put on eye protection. For any work on the upper body, keep the protective eyewear on throughout.
  3. The handpiece passes over the skin. Pigment in each follicle absorbs the light and heats up, which damages the follicle enough that it stops producing hair. Most people feel warmth and a snap like a rubber band; optional cooling makes it easier.
  4. Leave and carry on. Redness or swelling usually fades within a few hours, and an ice pack helps in the meantime.

A session can be as short as 15 minutes for an upper lip or as long as an hour for full legs or a back.

Where it can be used

  • The face: upper lip, chin, cheeks, jawline, neck and sideburns
  • Underarms, arms, hands and fingers
  • Thighs, lower legs, feet and toes
  • The bikini area
  • The chest, shoulders and upper and lower back

Between appointments

  • Shave, but do not wax. Waxing and electrolysis disturb the follicle the laser needs to reach, so stop them a month before treatment.
  • Keep out of the sun. Avoid sun and tanning beds for four weeks before a session, and direct sun for a day or two after.
  • Rest after each session. Skip exercise heavy enough to make you sweat for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Mention any medication. Some make the skin more sensitive to the laser.

Who treats you, and getting here

Treatments are carried out by Bellava’s licensed medical estheticians, Semira Crecco-Donnelly and Natalina McEwan. Bellava is in Bedford Hills, about 13 minutes without traffic from Somers town hall, mostly by I-684, and nearer 17 minutes from Lincolndale or Granite Springs.

Somers patients ask

Is it quicker than electrolysis? Yes. Each pulse of light delivers energy to several hairs at once, which is what makes a session move quickly.

Will it help with ingrown hairs? It should mean fewer of them. Because the follicle itself is damaged, there is less chance of a hair growing back inward and irritating the skin.

What if I have darker skin? Bellava’s IPL technology lets the settings be calibrated to your pigmentation, with lower energy and a cooling handpiece protecting the skin around each follicle.
