A plan before a session

Nobody at Bellava starts CoolSculpting by switching a machine on. The first appointment is a complimentary consultation with one of the practice’s specialists, who examines the areas that bother you, asks what you would like them to look like, goes through your health history and anything you have had done before, and explains how the treatment works. What you leave with is a written plan, and it answers four questions.

  1. Which areas? The ones treated most often are the abdomen, for a lower-belly pooch or a muffin top; the flanks; the back and the bulge at a bra strap; the inner and outer thighs; and under the chin. The treatment suits a pocket of fat that diet and exercise have not moved, not your weight as a whole.
  2. How many applicators at a time? That sets the length of each visit, anywhere from 35 to 60 minutes.
  3. How many sessions per area? Some areas respond to one; others need more, and the plan says so at the start.
  4. When to begin? The first subtle change can show at about three weeks, but the full effect takes two to four months while your body clears the treated cells. Count back from any date that matters.

How the cold does the work

Cooling panels, under precise control, bring the fat cells in the treated area down to a temperature that triggers their natural death, while the skin and tissue around them are left unharmed. Over the following months the body flushes those cells out on its own, and the slow pace gives the skin time to adjust, which is part of why the change looks natural. Cells cleared this way are gone for good, though weight gained later can still settle in areas that were never treated, so holding a steady weight is what protects the result.

In the chair

Expect cold as the panels go on, then a pulling sensation as suction draws the tissue between them; most people say it soon feels like a firm massage. Read, work or nap until it finishes. Nothing needs to heal, so you drive yourself home. Redness, bruising or numbness where you were treated can last from a few days to a few weeks. CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared, and the rare risk of paradoxical fat hyperplasia, in which treated fat thickens instead of shrinking, is kept low by following the CoolSculpting protocols closely.

Your sessions are carried out by licensed medical estheticians certified in CoolSculpting: Natalina McEwan, a CoolSculpt University graduate, and Semira Crecco-Donnelly, with more than 20 years in the field. Bellava’s medical director is Donna D’Alessio, MD.

From Purdys, Croton Falls or the centre of town

Bellava sits at 182 Route 117 Bypass Road in Bedford Hills. Purdys is beside an entrance to I-684, about ten minutes away without traffic; Croton Falls, joining at Hardscrabble Road, about 13; the town’s centre on Titicus Road, about 19.

North Salem patients ask

What if the real problem is loose skin? Cooling removes fat but does not tighten skin. Bellava’s board-certified plastic surgeon, Chang Soo Kim, MD, can advise on a tummy tuck; a consultation with him is requested by form, call or text, and the patient coordinator calls back to arrange it.

Can it go alongside weight-loss injections? Yes. CoolSculpting treats an area, and Bellava’s physician-supervised semaglutide program works on appetite; the two can be planned together.
