Tummy Tuck FAQs
Who is a good tummy tuck candidate?
A man or woman in good health who is unhappy about sagging, excess skin around their stomach (which can be caused by pregnancy, weight loss or gain, aging.
What are the different types of tummy tuck procedures?
There is the traditional tummy tuck/abdominoplasty procedure as well as the mini tummy tuck (Go here to read about the mini tummy tuck). The type of abdominoplasty that is appropriate for a patient depends on the amount of sagging skin that is removed, the degree of tightening that is required for the stomach muscles, etc. A mini tummy tuck is best for patients who require a minimal amount of abdominal muscle tightening and loose skin removal below the belly button.
How is a tummy tuck performed?
Generally, a horizontal incision is placed just within or above the pubic area. The length of the incision, which extends laterally toward the pelvic bones, depends largely on the amount of skin to be removed. The contour of this incision will vary somewhat according to the structure of your abdomen and the style of bathing suit or undergarments that you prefer. Sometimes liposuction may be used alone, or in conjunction with abdominoplasty, to remove abdominal fat. Dr. Lyons will discuss with you the particular method that he or she recommends for achieving the best result in your particular case.
How long does a tummy tuck procedure take?
While the time varies depending on each individual patient, a tummy tuck procedure can take any wear from 2-5 hours.
What type of anesthesia is used?
A tummy tuck requires general anesthesia.
What is recovery like after a tummy tuck?
Light activities may be resumed a few days after the operation. You should take it easy for at least 2 weeks after surgery. You will be able to wear a compression garment for several weeks after surgery while you heal.
When can I return to work after a tummy tuck?
You can return to work within 2 weeks after a tummy tuck. However, you should avoid strenuous activities for 4-6 weeks to allow for proper healing.
Does a tummy tuck leave scars?
The resulting scar from a tummy tuck runs from hip to hip. The incision is made low on the stomach and is easily covered by bikini bottoms or undergarments.
Are tummy tuck results permanent?
Results may be long lasting, provided the patient maintains a healthy lifestyle, which includes a healthy diet and exercise regime.

CoolSculpting® FAQs
How do I know if CoolSculpting® is right for me?
Good candidates are people with noticeable bulges of fat in areas they’d like to get rid of.
How is CoolSculpting® Different from laser liposuction procedures such as SlimLipo, Smart Lipo and Smart Lipo?
CoolSculpting is not a weight loss solution for those who are obese, nor is it a substitute for SlimLipo, surgical fat removal or skin tightening such as a tummy tuck. During a complimentary consultation at Bellava, it can be determined if you are a good candidate and work to determine the best treatment plan during a one-on-one consultation.
How long is each CoolSculpting® treatment?
During your consultation, it will be discussed how much time should be allotted based on your needs. Typical CoolSculpting treatments last between 1-3 hours.
Is CoolSculpting® safe?
CoolSculpting is cleared for the flanks and abdomen by the FDA and is proven to be a safe and effective treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
Typically patients see a noticeable difference in fat reduction in the treated area after 1 visit but you may appreciate even more fat reduction with several treatments.
What happens during the CoolSculpting® treatment?
The device will be placed on the body so that the unwanted bulge is drawn up between 2 cooling panels. The sensation is a firm pull and pressure–enough of a pull to ensure the selected tissue will be cooled most efficiently. An hour or so later, you’re done. Most people read, work on their laptop or take a nap during treatment.
When can I return to my normal activities?
Typically you can return to your activities immediately after a CoolSculpting procedure, although you may experience some minor tingling or numbness. This is temporary and will resolve quickly.
When will I see results?
You may start to see results as quickly as 3 weeks after your treatment and will experience the more dramatic results after 2 months. Your body will still flush out fat cells and continues doing so for up to 4-6 weeks after treatment.
Are the results permanent?
When you have your CoolSculpting treatment, the affected cells will be eliminated. As long as you maintain your weight with a normal diet, your long-term results should remain stable.

Neck Lift FAQs
What is a neck lift?
A neck lift is a procedure that lifts and rejuvenates a sagging and/or full neck jaw line.
Who is a good candidate for a neck lift?
The best candidate for a neck lift is a healthy man or woman who are unhappy about unwanted sagging of the neck and/or jaw line.
What type of anesthesia is used for a neck lift?
It depends on what kind of neck lift procedure you undergo. Most surgical neck lift procedures require general anesthesia. However some surgical neck lifts are accomplished under local anesthesia and a neck procedure using SlimLipo laser liposuction can be done under local.
What happens during a neck lift procedure?
A neck lift involves incisions being made under the chin and behind or under the ear, so the surgeon can tighten the muscles and skin. Liposuction maybe used if you have excessive amounts of fat in the chin area as well. If your neck-lift requires liposuction to remove excess fat, the liposuction procedure is typically performed first. An incision will be made below the chin to remove the excess fat deposits. The fat deposits will be removed by inserting a small cannula (hollow tube) beneath the skin and into the fatty tissue. The cannula is used to break up the fat, and then remove it from the neck area. The excess skin is then trimmed away before the wound is closed with stitches or tissue glue, usually behind or below the ear. A pressure dressing is then placed around the head to help the wound heal.
How long does a neck lift take to perform?
A neck lift can take between 1 ½ to 3 hours to complete depending on what approach is being used and how much work is being done.
Are there scars after a necklift?
Though incisions are made that leave scars, they tend to be well concealed, as they are mainly located behind the ear and sometimes beneath the chin.
Is the necklift a painful procedure?
No since patient is under local or general anesthesia. However, patients may experience some discomfort after a neck lift, due to swelling and bruising, which can be managed with prescription or over-the-counter medication.
When are the stitches removed after a neck lift?
The stitches are removed within 4-7 days after the neck lift.
What is recovery from a neck lift like?
Most patients will experience 1-2 weeks of some degree of bruising and swelling. A an elastic, compressive bandage is worn after the procedure for a week or more.
When will I be able to return to work after a neck lift?
Most patients are able to return to work within 5-10 days after a neck lift and sometimes sooner.
When can I exercise after a neck lift?
Aerobic activity may be resumed within 10-14 days after the neck lift and more strenuous activity (resistance workouts) within 3-4 weeks.

Call 914-600-5294 for a free consultation with Dr. Lyons to discuss if Neck Lift is right for you.

Cheek lift FAQs

What is the difference between a Cheek lift (mid facelift) and a Face Lift?

These procedures focus on different areas of the face. The purpose of a Cheek Lift is to correct the signs of aging found in the central portions of the face. These changes typically consist of a deepening fold between the cheek and upper lip (the naso-labial fold), a hollowing or depression above this fold, and loss of the natural fullness over the cheekbones. The best way to find out what procedure will fulfill your needs and goals is to meet with Dr. James R. Lyons at Bellava MedAesthetics & Plastic Surgery Center so he can help you fully discuss your desires and needs.

Who is a good candidate for a cheek lift?

Good candidates for a cheek lift are those who have early sagging of the soft tissues in the middle portion of the face. This pattern typically presents as a deepening fold between the cheek and upper lip (the nasolabial fold), a hollowing or depression above this fold, and loss of the natural fullness over the cheekbones. In this case, an eyelid lift may also be beneficial (Go here to read about eyelid surgery/blepharoplasty at Bellava MedAesthetics & Plastic Surgery Center).Other good candidates are also those who have the changes described above along with more advanced changes, such as sagging of the jowls and neck skin. Sometimes this group will benefit from a Cheek Lift combined with a facelift (go here to read about facelifts performed by Dr. Lyons in our same comfortable plastic surgery center.

What’s the difference between a cheek lift and dermal fillers?

Injectable dermal fillers such as Radiesse, Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane are substances comprise of hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in the body. Dermal fillers are often used to plump cheeks or to correct deep creases in the mid face region such as nasolabial folds.  While dermal fillers can “lift” the cheek area, a cheek lift is usually required when a more substantial correction is called for. For instance, if the face has experienced a great deal of sagging, dermal fillers alone may not do the trick. Only an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Lyons can determine what procedure will give you your desired outcome which is why it is important to schedule a consultation in order to review all of your options.Go here to read more about dermal fillers carried out by our injectable expert at Bellava MedAesthetics & Plastic Surgery Centerin Bedford Hills.

Rhinoplasty FAQs
Is a rhinoplasty right for me?
Nose cosmetic surgery is a highly individualized procedure and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else’s desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image. You should have specific but realistic goals in mind for the improvement of your appearance.
Do all rhinoplasties look the same?
Absolutely not. Dr. Lyons contours the nose in a shape and size that is commensurate with the width of the eyes, the height of the cheekbones, mouth width, chin shape and jaw line. A well-performed rhinoplasty is defined by the face and not the plastic surgeon.
Will I still have my old nose?
Yes. Dr. Lyons works to achieve the most natural and subtle changes.
Will my nose still be in sync with my ethnicity?
Absolutely. Dr Lyons has extensive experience with rhinoplasties in cultures that take pride in the dominance of the nose. Often it is just the desire to tone down an unattractive, hyperbolic feature of the nose.
What happens during a rhinoplasty procedure?
Incisions are made inside the nostrils to alter the nasal bones depending on the patient’s desired result. Cartilage may be trimmed. The nasal passages are then packed and an external splint is applied.
Are the scars visible?
There are no external scars after a rhinoplasty procedure.
Will I require general anesthesia?
Not necessarily. This will depend on the extent of internal surgery that is required.
When can I return to work or the gym?
Generally, a small cast is applied to the nose at the time of surgery for a period of seven days. Patients are instructed not to exercise for two weeks. Depending on the nature of employment, patients can return to work in a matter of days. A longer period of recuperation is recommended for patients who hold high profile positions, as well as those whose jobs entail a high degree of physical activity.
