Liposuction procedures are a fairly common procedure where fat is removed from the body by a surgical procedure. Using a vacuum or suction tube, or sometimes called a vacuum wand, a plastic surgeon makes small incisions into the trouble areas where excess fat deposits are and then uses suction to remove fat from the body. Liposuction has come a long way since its approved inception into plastic-surgery and procedures are safer and the equipment used to perform liposuction has greatly improved. There are a few types of liposuction and they are:
Tumescent liposuction where a local anesthetic is used to numb the area of the body where the tube will be used to vacuum away the fat deposits. A large amount of solution that is a combination of lidocaine and epinephrine is injected into the fatty tissues. This type of liposuction may not require that the patient is under general anesthesia.
Ultrasound Liposuction is a technique using ultrasound that liquefies the fatty deposits which makes it easier to remove. This technique is very helpful when removing tough fatty deposits from the sides and upper abdomen.
Laser-assisted liposuction uses lasers that pulse a low energy wave into the fatty tissue which like ultrasound, liquefies the fatty deposits making it easier to remove.
