Do you suffer from tummy woes? We’re not talking about curing an upset stomach but rather getting rid of belly fat and/or loose skin around your abdomen. You know, that muffin top or spare tire that can plague both men and women despite diet and exercise.
For women, tummy woes often hit after pregnancy, when your body simply doesn’t bounce back after baby. Or during perimenopause and menopause when most every woman gains a bit more girth in their midsection due to hormonal changes. Guys experience the middle-aged spread, too, as their metabolism slows with age.
This extra midsection padding is often tough to get ride of since the level of hormones that maintain muscle mass in both men and women tends to drop off progressively during one’s thirties, forties and fifties. At the same time people tend to be less physically active as they age, causing muscles to shrink due to decreased use, also making weight gain more likely.
If you want a firm, flat tummy but can’t seem to get it on your own, there are several highly effective surgical and nonsurgical options available today. Here’s a rundown on the most popular cosmetic procedures that can help you get those fab abs you’ve been dreaming of.
Full Tummy Tuck versus Mini Tummy Tuck
(Full Abdominoplasty versus Mini Abdominoplasty)
While the goal of a full tummy tuck and a mini tummy tuck is the same–that is, to create a tighter, flatter and smoother abdominal profile–they are different procedures used to treat specific issues.
A full tummy tuck is used to treat patients who were formerly very overweight, or, women whose abdominal skin has been stretched out and/or muscle has been weakened or separated. (Muscle separation of the rectus muscle, also known as diastasis, often occurs after pregnancy.)
During a full tummy tuck procedure, which is performed under general anesthesia, the plastic surgeon separates the navel from the rest of the tissue and abdominal wall and pulls the muscles underneath into a tighter position. The flap is stretched down, and excess tissue is removed. With a full abdominoplasty, there will be a scar that extends across the lower abdomen, typically extending from hip to hip. Belly button restoration is sometimes required. Recovery usually lasts between 4-6 weeks.
In patients where the abdominal wall does not protrude that significantly and fat deposits exist only in the region below the belly button, a mini tummy tuck can be performed. Through a single, short incision at or above the pubic area that stretches a few inches across the lower abdomen, the plastic surgeon removes excess skin, and often uses a fat-removal procedure such as SlimLipo liposuction to further contour the area. The mini tummy tuck in a scar above the pubic bone that is typically shorter/smaller than a scar from a full tummy tuck. The mini tummy tuck can be accomplished under general or local anesthesia. Recovery usually lasts 1-3 weeks.

SlimLipo™ Laser Liposuction
If you have a tummy that requires fat removal with minimal skin tightening, SlimLipo may be right for you.SlimLipo from Palomar Medical uses biolysis to liquefy fat before its removal. Liquefying fat helps to remove it in a much more even and precise manner than traditional liposuction, which means the body sculpting of specific areas can be done much more easily and with more accurate results. Other common areas treated with SlimLipo laser liposuction include the back, buttocks, chin, neck, love handles, thighs and upper arms. SlimLipo is performed under local anesthesia, which minimizes medical risks, speeds recovery time and minimizes the costs usually associated with traditional liposuction.
